Going Digital–the check-in version

Last week, I shared images of our first digital learning hyperdoc in progress.  I promised an additional post on how we were going to check in on the work as the students moved through it.

We have access to a variety of tools in our district; we decided to use a combination of Edulastic (for the pre-assessment and graded final assessment) and Google Forms (for the students check-in on work completion).

While Irene went looking for work for the hyperdoc in IXL, I used the content of our hyperdoc to create a Google Form for students to report on the work they had completed during the week.

We used a combination of required and optional questions–most of the questions were required because we do need to know what the students have done in this week, so students do have to answer, one way or another.  We included checkboxes for students to “choose all that apply;” we also followed up with a reflection question on each set of checkboxes.  Our thinking about the reflection question was that, if students just go box-checking-happy, they have to back-track in the reflection to be more thoughtful.

As usual, we decided to end with an open-ended question so students could share whatever feedback was meaningful for them.  This question feels particularly needed in the uncertainty of our COVID-19 days.

As I write this, we still haven’t rolled this out yet, so we don’t know how this will work in practice, but, as I wrote two weeks ago, I wanted to share our thinking as we designed our work, trying to incorporate the principles of Universal Design for Learning in choice, standards-based assessment and work, and building independence.
